Inspiration for The Kalinago Compass™ comes from my late Dominican grandmother, who was of Kalinago descent, like many other Dominicans residing on the island today. Through my many vacations back ‘home,’ as a first-generation Canadian, I learned about the power of our Indigenous Caribbean roots. From a simple cure to a common cold, dream symbolism and interpretation, knowledge of plants and herbs, connection to the land, and so much more I have always felt my Indigenous roots guiding me through life, much like a compass. As a first generation Caribbean Canadian, I felt the impact of having to navigate the education system with minimal generational knowledge. My passion for education and teaching began at a young age. As an educator, I am focused on being who I needed when I was younger, because as we all know knowledge is power. This brand — The Kalinago Compass,™ was born out of a passion for navigating the educational system in Ontario with ancestral wisdom and guidance. When we have all the information, we are empowered to do what is best for our children. Our mission is “rooted in direction for families in education” so that they can thrive, achieve, and grow inspired by informed decisions made by parents, caregivers, and educators in our school systems.
